Official Statement on the Authority of the California Tenants Union

The California Tenants Union (CTU) is a voluntary membership organization formed to advocate for tenant rights and to provide education and support to its members. CTU acts on behalf of its members only with their consent, granted through membership or signed authorization forms. The Union’s authority is grounded in California law protecting the right of individuals to freely associate and form organizations for common purposes (Cal. Corp. Code § 18035 et seq.), as well as statutes safeguarding tenants’ rights to organize and engage in collective advocacy without retaliation (Cal. Civ. Code §§ 1942.4, 1946.7). CTU does not require any special license or permit to operate as a membership advocacy organization. If the organization chooses to incorporate as a nonprofit or solicit charitable contributions, it may be required to register with the California Secretary of State and the Attorney General’s Registry of Charitable Trusts and comply with applicable IRS regulations. We are registered with the IRS our EIN number is 33-3886592. We are also registered for the California State of Secretary.
